The All England Club announced the wildcard recipients on Tuesday morning in what had become one of the most anticipated announcements in recent memory, given Serena’s return to professional tennis earlier this month after four years in retirement.
Serena, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, didn’t apply for a singles wildcard and has remained non-committal when asked whether she intends to resume her singles career. She has been a fixture on the professional tour since making her debut in 1994, stepping away only when forced to do so by health problems. Venus turns 46 on Wednesday. The Wimbledon wildcard committee also faced multiple tricky decisions this year. Among those awarded a wildcard was Maja Chwalińska, who captured global attention earlier this month by reaching the French Open women’s singles final as a qualifier.
Although Chwalińska missed the direct-entry rankings cutoff for Wimbledon because the deadline fell before her Paris breakthrough, her rapid rise up the rankings means she is all set to enjoy the rare distinction of entering a Grand Slam as both a wildcard recipient and a seeded player. Ranked No. 21 in the world, Chwalińska will enter Wimbledon as one of the more intriguing wildcard recipients. The All England Club has handed singles wildcards to veteran stars Stan Wawrinka as well, who is all set to retire later this year and Grigor Dimitrov. Meanwhile, Dan Evans, who is also expected to retire after the Championships, wasn’t included on the initial singles wildcard list but has been awarded a doubles wildcard alongside fellow Briton Henry Searle.
