File photos of Twisha Sharma (Social Media) The Twisha Sharma death case has taken a fresh turn after police informed the family that the 33-year-old’s body, preserved at the AIIMS Bhopal mortuary since May 13, is at risk of decomposing. The development comes even as Twisha’s family continues to demand a second post-mortem examination and an independent probe into her death. According to the details, police wrote to the family urging them to take custody of the body, citing limitations in storage facilities at AIIMS Bhopal. The letter stated, “Twisha’s body has been kept in the mortuary for a prolonged period and is highly likely to decompose. Therefore, we request that you kindly make arrangements to collect the body." The police further informed the family that the body is currently being stored at minus 4 degrees Celsius, while preservation for longer durations would require a temperature of minus 80 degrees Celsius, a facility not available at the hospital. POST-MORTEM REPORT POINTS TO HANGING Meanwhile, the official post-mortem report conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at AIIMS Bhopal concluded that the cause of death was “antemortem hanging by ligature." However, the autopsy also documented multiple simple injuries caused by blunt force on different parts of Twisha Sharma’s body.
Twisha was found hanging from a gymnastic ring rope on the terrace of her home at nearly 10.26 pm on May 12 and was declared dead shortly after midnight on May 13. Doctors reportedly found a double reddish patterned ligature mark around the upper third of the neck, along with signs associated with asphyxia, including bluish discolouration of fingernails and congestion in the face. The autopsy also noted several antemortem injuries, including bruises on the arm, forearm, wrist and finger, as well as abrasions on the neck and a bruise beneath the scalp in the left frontoparietal region. The report further stated that blood, viscera, nail clippings and hair samples had been preserved and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for toxicology and DNA examination to rule out intoxication and aid the investigation. FAMILY CONTINUES TO DEMAND SECOND AUTOPSY Despite the post-mortem findings, Twisha Sharma’s family has maintained that she was subjected to mental torture and dowry harassment by her in-laws. The family has repeatedly sought a second post-mortem examination, alleging foul play in the case. Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, also accused the deceased’s mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, of attempting to malign his daughter’s character publicly. “This woman is currently out on anticipatory bail, and she is violating the conditions of that bail. She is violating the law by coming before the media and, in this manner, publicly maligning the character of the deceased," Sharma alleged.
He additionally demanded an independent probe monitored either by the Supreme Court or the Chief Justice of India. MOTHER-IN-LAW MAKES CLAIMS ABOUT PREGNANCY The case saw another controversial twist after Giribala Singh claimed that Twisha’s behaviour changed after she learned about her pregnancy. “On the 17th, the moment she received confirmation of her pregnancy, her entire demeanour changed; she declared that she did not want to keep this child," Singh told ANI. She further claimed that Twisha later underwent a medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), and alleged that her son Samarth Singh was emotionally distressed following the procedure. The post-mortem report also mentioned a history of MTP performed a week before Twisha’s death, noting retained decidual tissue in the uterus during internal examination. SIT CONTINUES SEARCH FOR ACCUSED Police said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and multiple local teams are continuing efforts to trace and arrest the accused, Samarth Singh, who remains absconding. Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajnish Kashyap Kaul said correspondence has been initiated with the Regional Passport Office and the Bhopal Commissionerate regarding a lookout notice. “Regarding the lookout notice, necessary correspondence has been initiated with the DCP office, Bhopal Commissionerate, and the Regional Passport Office," ACP Kaul told ANI. He added, “Our SIT team, along with local teams, is actively engaged. We are gathering intelligence through both technical means and human sources.
The DCP has also announced a reward." Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for information leading to Samarth Singh’s arrest. Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025. Her family has alleged that she faced continuous mental harassment and dowry-related abuse after marriage.
