Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, on Tuesday (June 16, 2026), announced a revised scheme for waiver of crop loans up to ₹75,000 availed by farmers, irrespective of the size of their landholdings, from cooperative banks between May 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026. According to the announcement, farmers across all categories, including marginal, small and large farmers, who availed crop loans of up to ₹75,000 from cooperative banks will receive a full waiver.
Those who availed crop loans exceeding ₹75,000 will receive a waiver of ₹35,000. The revised scheme will benefit 14.43 lakh farmers and entail an expenditure of ₹5,932.23 crore to the government, said an official release. On May 25, the State government had announced a waiver of crop loans up to ₹50,000 availed by small and marginal farmers from cooperative banks.
This announcement received a mixed response from sections of the farming community, who demanded that the scheme be restructured. Following this, Mr. Vijay chaired a review meeting on June 15 with Ministers and officials to restructure the
loan waiver scheme. Under the revised announcement, a total of 8,33,773 marginal farmers, 5,16,183 small farmers and 93,548 large farmers will receive waivers amounting to ₹3,599.67 crore, ₹1,995.42 crore and ₹337.15 crore, respectively, the official release added.
