The Central Government is set to tighten drug safety regulations by making a doctor's prescription mandatory for the purchase of many medicinal syrups, including commonly used cough formulations.
The move is aimed at curbing self-medication, preventing misuse, and enhancing patient safety following concerns over contaminated syrups linked to child deaths in recent years.
Under the proposed amendments to the Drugs Rules, 1945, the exemption that allowed certain syrups to be sold over the counter could be removed, ensuring stricter medical supervision before these medicines are dispensed.
