(Source: X) In a distressing incident, a student from Uttar Pradesh allegedly died by suicide at a hostel run by Manipal Academy of BFSI near Bharati City in Bengaluru’s Kothanur area. Family and students allege harassment by the academy staff.
The incident has triggered massive protests and an FIR has been registered against the staff members. The deceased student, identified as Chunnu Kumar, was studying at the Manipal institute and was found hanging inside the academy hostel on May 18. Police suspect the student may have taken the extreme step after allegedly failing in examinations. However, family members and students have accused the academy of harassment, humiliation and intentionally failing him in exams. Student Was Subjected To Public Humiliation According to the complaint filed by Chunnu’s father, Munna Kumar, the student had repeatedly spoken about being publicly humiliated by staff members and had fallen into depression due to alleged mental harassment.
The FIR alleges that academy officials intentionally failed the student and insulted him in front of others, pushing him into severe emotional distress. Based on the complaint, Kothanur Police have registered a case against HOD Chandrashekhar Kannayya, Sunithashree, Venkatesh and other staff members under charges including abetment to suicide. The complaint further alleges that academy staff removed the body after the student died by suicide and threatened Chunnu’s friends against lodging complaints. Following the incident, students staged protests outside the academy premises near Chokkanahalli, blocking roads and demanding action against the institution. The body has been shifted for post-mortem examination and further investigation is underway at Kothanur Police Station.
