According to an NDTV report, Motegaonkar was allegedly developing a massive school and college campus spread across eight acres in the Khopegaon Shivar area. The report mentioned that construction work at the site was in full swing before Motegaonkar’s arrest. It mentioned that a huge multi-storey building was nearing completion on around two-and-a-half acres of the land, while the remaining portion remained vacant. The development has now raised questions regarding the source of funding for the ambitious project amid allegations linked to the NEET paper leak case.
CBI GETS NINE-DAY CUSTODY Meanwhile, a Delhi court granted nine days of CBI custody of Motegaonkar after his arrest in Pune in connection with the NEET UG paper leak investigation. The CBI alleged before the Rouse Avenue Court that Motegaonkar was actively involved in the conspiracy to leak the chemistry question paper before the NEET UG 2026 examination. Investigators told the court that he runs RCC coaching institutes in Maharashtra’s Latur and allegedly distributed the leaked paper to students before the exam. Special CBI Judge Ajay Gupta granted the remand while noting that the investigation was at a crucial stage and custodial interrogation was necessary to identify other accused persons, recover digital evidence and examine the financial trail connected to the alleged paper leak network. The court directed that Motegaonkar be produced again on May 26. LEAKED PAPER FOUND ON MOBILE PHONE: CBI According to the CBI’s submissions in court, Motegaonkar allegedly received the chemistry questions and answers for NEET UG 2026 on April 23, well before the May 3 examination. Investigators claimed a copy of the leaked question paper was recovered from his mobile phone.
The agency further alleged that Motegaonkar shared the leaked paper and answers with several individuals. During the hearing, the investigating officer also referred to a purported video in which the accused allegedly claimed that questions he had provided to students appeared in the actual examination paper. The CBI also informed the court that Motegaonkar’s alleged links with another accused, Prahalad Kulkarni, were under investigation. Prosecutors argued that custodial interrogation was required not only to analyse digital devices and communication records but also to trace the larger conspiracy and prevent similar offences in future examinations. NEET RE-EXAMINATION ON JUNE 21 The controversy surrounding the paper leak has triggered a nationwide debate over the integrity of competitive examinations. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan chaired a high-level review meeting to assess preparations for the NEET UG re-examination scheduled for June 21. More than 23 lakh students are expected to appear for the re-examination after the May 3 exam was cancelled amid allegations of widespread paper leaks. During the review meeting, Pradhan stressed the need for “complete integrity and transparency" and directed officials to ensure that all loopholes identified in the earlier examination process are addressed before the re-test.
The minister also emphasised that the re-examination must be conducted under stringent security protocols and instructed authorities to coordinate with District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police across states to ensure foolproof arrangements. Officials also discussed technical and administrative reforms aimed at making the examination process more transparent and secure. According to the report, the government is also considering shifting NEET examinations from paper-based mode to a computer-based format to reduce the possibility of leaks in the future.
