A political development has emerged in West Bengal after twenty rebel Members of Parliament announced a split from their party to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. The rebel lawmakers have approached the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking separate seating arrangements and declared their intention to work with the Democratic Alliance. The Nationalist Citizens Party of India is an unrecognised, tribal-focused political outfit founded in Tripura in 2022 with limited electoral success.
Ground reports indicate that the registered office of the party in West Bengal showed zero activity, while its founder appeared unaware of the merger. The ruling party in West Bengal has criticised the move, alleging that the rival national party orchestrated the merger. The development has sparked a debate on whether the rebel lawmakers can bypass the anti-defection law.
If the merger is officially approved, the regional outfit will become the fifth-largest political party in the Lok Sabha.
