India is experiencing extreme weather conditions, marked by a sluggish and delayed monsoon. According to the Met department, the country recorded only 19.2 millimetres of rainfall against the normal 53.7 millimetres between June 4 and June 15, resulting in a 64 percent deficit. While the monsoon has reached southern states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, it has not advanced to central India, including Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, as projected.
Consequently, Mumbai faces high heat and humidity, while Delhi experiences dust storms and strong winds. Rain-bearing systems remain largely confined to the Himalayan belt. The delayed monsoon coincides with severe heatwaves, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius in states like Rajasthan. Scientists note that these shifting weather patterns, including recent instances of delayed winter snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, reflect broader climate changes impacting the Indian subcontinent.
