A political crisis has emerged in West Bengal as twenty rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) Members of Parliament (MPs) announced a merger with the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India. This move aims to bypass the anti-defection law and support the Democratic Alliance (NDA), which could assist the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha. Concurrently, sixty-four rebel Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) plan to petition the Election Commission for the original party symbol, citing financial corruption and a medical college incident.
Amidst these developments, a loyalist leader faced an egg attack in Kolkata. Meanwhile, India faces a climate crisis. The Meteorological Department reported a sixty-four percent rainfall deficit between June 4 and June 15, with the monsoon stalled in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. This delay has extended a heatwave, pushing temperatures past forty-five degrees Celsius in Rajasthan and altering weather patterns.
