Yadgir farmers still waiting for a good spell of rainfall

With less than average rainfall being registered till May-end, sowing for the kharif season has been hit in Yadgir district where just 20.87% (83,862 hectares) of the targeted 4.01 lakh hectares has been covered. According to data provided by the government department concerned, Yadgir district received 60.3 mm of normal rainfall against the actual rainfall of 100.9 mm from March 1 to May 31.
The normal rainfall between June 1 and 15 was 45 mm against the actual rainfall of 60. 7 mm. The shortage in this period has now forced farmers to wait for a good spell of rainfall. Despite the official arrival of the south-west monsoon rain on June 4, the district hasn’t received any good amount of showers affecting kharif sowing.
Cotton is a major crop with a target of 2,02,452 hectares. Paddy is in the second place with a target of 97,648 hectares and red gram is the third major crop with a target of 84,999 hectares. Green gram, which is considered a short-term cash crop, is in the fourth place with a target of 13,770 hectares. The Agriculture Department has provided details of the area so far covered: Red gram has been sown in 16,128 hectares (18.97%) against a target of 84,999 hectares.
Green gram is sown in 3,398 hectares (24.68%) against a target of 13,770 hectares, while cotton has been taken up in 64,073 hectares (31.65%). Paddy saplings are yet to be planted.
