Videos showed strong winds carrying thick clouds of dust through the area, with trees swaying violently in the stormy weather. The dust storm struck around 2 pm, with wind speeds of nearly 70 kmph, and lasted for about half an hour, engulfing houses in Churu.
People were forced to rush indoors to avoid the strong winds and dust. A severe storm also triggered a huge wall of dust in Bikaner during the afternoon in yet another incident of intense weather activity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that thunderstorms, dust storms and rainfall are likely to continue in several parts of Rajasthan over the next few days under the influence of a western disturbance. The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur has predicted thunderstorms with strong winds of 60–70 kmph and light to moderate rainfall at isolated locations across the Bikaner, Jaipur, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Kota, Jodhpur and Udaipur divisions later today. Meteorologists have warned that such dust storms are common during the pre-monsoon season in Rajasthan, particularly when hot desert winds interact with changing weather systems over north India.
