A senior Congress leader and current Home Minister of Karnataka has issued a demand for the RSS to demonstrate transparency regarding its registration, finances, and operations. In a formal communication, the minister stated that an organization advocating for nationalism and discipline must comply with constitutional norms and financial accountability. The minister questioned why the RSS should be exempt from rules that apply to ordinary citizens, non-governmental organizations, trusts, and companies, insisting that the organization must register, disclose finances, undergo audits, and pay taxes.
The minister also urged the RSS leadership to use the organization's upcoming centenary as an opportunity for constitutional introspection rather than mere celebration. This development escalates the ongoing political tussle between the Congress and the RSS in Karnataka, following previous directives requiring organizations to obtain permission before hosting events in government schools and colleges. The minister had previously warned activists to maintain proper registration documents, emphasizing that if religious institutions are accountable for donations, the RSS must also disclose its funding sources and expenditures.
