A rope was tied around his waist and held by a police official as armed personnel escorted him through the streets.

He has been booked regarding accusations of extortion, land grabbing, violence and other offences. Last week also he was paraded in a similar manner after he was arrested near Panitanki on the India-Nepal border in a joint operation by the Special Task Force and Darjeeling Police after allegedly attempting to leave the country. He was later produced before a court in Diamond Harbour, which remanded him to five days of police custody. Large crowds gathered to witness the proceedings despite extensive security arrangements, including the deployment of police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel. Police said Jahangir Khan had been attempting to leave the country through West Bengal’s border areas when he was apprehended.
The Trinamool leader had faced allegations of electoral malpractice during polling in Falta on April 29, held in the second phase of the Assembly elections. The Election Commission subsequently cancelled the poll and ordered re-polling on May 21. Khan withdrew from the contest ahead of the fresh voting and has remained at large since the original polling day. The BJP eventually secured the Falta seat with a margin exceeding one lakh votes. An influential figure in South 24 Parganas and considered close to Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee, Jahangir Khan had for years faced accusations from residents over alleged land grabbing, extortion and electoral violence following the change of regime in the state. Soon after his arrest, enraged locals allegedly vandalised his office in Falta, smashing windows and furniture. A large quantity of relief material was also recovered from the premises.
