Yet when they take the field on Monday, they will face opponents driven by a different but equally powerful emotion: the thrill of seeing their nation compete on football’s biggest stage for the first time. The European champions begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H campaign against Cape Verde, with Uruguay and Saudi Arabia completing the group. On paper, it appears a clash between teams from very different footballing worlds. Few sides in international football have been as consistent as Luis de la Fuente’s Spain over the past four years.
Since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Colombia at Wembley in March 2024, Spain have gone 30 matches unbeaten, recording 23 victories and seven draws while producing some of the most attractive attacking football in the game. The only blemish on that remarkable sequence came in the 2025 Nations League final. Spain twice led Portugal before settling for a 2-2 draw after extra time, eventually losing 5-4 on penalties and surrendering the title they had won two years earlier. Cape Verde, however, have not travelled to North America simply to make up the numbers. The Blue Sharks were among the surprise qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and, with a population of fewer than 600,000, are the third-smallest nation by population ever to reach the tournament, following Iceland in 2018 and Curacao in 2026. Their rise has been built through a combination of local talent and a far-reaching diaspora. That formula proved highly successful during qualification, as Cape Verde won seven of their 10 matches, suffered just one defeat and secured a stunning home victory over Cameroon.
While their World Cup debut may seem like a fairy tale, the foundations have been years in the making. Cape Verde first announced themselves on the continental stage in 2013 when they qualified for their maiden Africa Cup of Nations and reached the quarter-finals at the first attempt. Spain could be cautious with two of their biggest attacking stars. Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are nearing full fitness after hamstring injuries suffered in April. Both returned to training with the squad on Thursday, but De la Fuente may decide that patience is preferable to unnecessary risk. For Spain, the objective is clear: a second World Cup crown to add to their 2010 triumph in South Africa. For Cape Verde, Monday represents something even more significant – the opening chapter of a World Cup story their supporters have waited generations to witness.
