Rapid Read The sight will be deployed on the Army’s NEGEV 7.62 mm light machine guns, which are already in service with infantry units. The Indian Army has cleared the Israeli-origin MEPRO X6 telescopic sight for its in-service NEGEV light machine guns following extensive operational and environmental trials. The programme will be executed through Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), while the sights will be manufactured in India under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement between Israeli optics firm Meprolight and Indian company RRP Defense. The induction is expected to enhance the Army’s target acquisition and engagement capabilities at extended ranges. The selection follows a multi-year procurement process during which the MEPRO X6 underwent user evaluations and testing under demanding operational conditions.
According to the manufacturer, the sight met the Army’s requirements for reliability, durability, accuracy and ease of operation. BEL secured the tender with a solution based on the MEPRO X6 and will act as the prime contractor for supplies to the Army. Under the ToT arrangement, RRP Defense will manufacture the sights in India and supply them to BEL for delivery to the Army. The MEPRO X6 is a fixed 6 magnification telescopic sight designed for assault rifles and light machine guns. It offers improved target identification, a wider field of view and enhanced engagement capabilities at longer distances. The sight will be deployed on the Army’s NEGEV 7.62 mm light machine guns, which are already in service with infantry units. The Army had earlier contracted for 41,000 NEGEV machine guns from Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), with production being undertaken in India through PLR Systems. Meprolight Senior Vice-President Golan Kalimi described the Army’s decision as a major milestone for the company.
“The selection of the MEPRO X6 by the Indian Army is a significant milestone. Through our technology transfer partnership, we are proud to contribute advanced capability while supporting the long-term growth of India’s defence and manufacturing ecosystem," he said. The programme brings together two systems developed by companies under Israel’s SK Group. While the NEGEV machine gun is manufactured by IWI, the MEPRO X6 sight is produced by Meprolight. Defence industry officials said the combination was expected to improve the effectiveness of infantry units by enabling quicker target detection and more accurate engagement. The programme also expands local manufacturing in the soldier systems segment. The technology transfer agreement will allow Indian industry to acquire manufacturing know-how and production capabilities for advanced optical sights. The induction of the new sights comes as the Army continues to modernise its infantry weapons and soldier equipment, with a focus on improving battlefield awareness, lethality and operational readiness.
