A political crisis has emerged within the Trinamool Congress as twenty rebel Members of Parliament formally announced a split from the party. The dissident faction has declared a merger with the Nationalist Citizen Party of India and expressed intentions to support the Democratic Alliance. The rebel legislators met the Lok Sabha Speaker to seek permission for separate seating arrangements in parliament. In response, the original party leadership opposed the move, accusing the breakaway group of lacking the required numbers and exploiting the party's legacy.
The dispute highlights the legal complexities surrounding the anti-defection law, which mandates that a valid merger requires approval from the party chief to protect rebels from disqualification. The Supreme Court previously ruled that a majority of legislators does not automatically constitute the real political party. The conflict is expected to reach the Election Commission, which will evaluate numeric strength, organisational support, and party constitution records to determine which faction retains the original party name and symbol, similar to past disputes in other regional parties.
