The Trinamool Congress has initiated a political and legal battle against its rebel members of parliament, approaching the Lok Sabha Speaker to prevent a breakaway faction from receiving official recognition. The party leadership argues that political splits are no longer legally protected under the anti-defection law, warning that dissident members of parliament could face disqualification if they attempt to function as a separate group.
While the rebel faction claims majority support and plans a merger with another political party to secure the official name and symbol, loyalists continue to defend their claim over the original party organisation. The official party leadership has requested a formal hearing before any claim by the dissident group is considered.
