A major rebellion has emerged within the Trinamool Congress as a breakaway faction of twenty Members of Parliament formally announced a split to merge with the NCPI and support the NDA. The rebel faction stated they met the Lok Sabha Speaker to seek permission to sit separately. Senior leaders from the breakaway group confirmed the merger, noting that the courts will decide who represents the real political party.
The original party leadership strongly opposed the move, with loyalist legislators accusing the rebels of winning on the party chief's appeal and claiming they lack the required numbers. The situation draws parallels to the 2023 Supreme Court verdict on political splits, which established that a majority of legislators does not automatically constitute the original political party. The apex court noted that a valid merger requires approval from the party head.
The Speaker must act neutrally and decide on defection cases within three months, with all decisions remaining subject to judicial review.
