Published By, Last Updated: June 15, 2026, 09:14 IST Germany have started their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a statement win over debutant Curacao and in doing so broken Brazil's all-time record. (AP Photo) Germany crushed FIFA World Cup debutant Curacao 7-1 in their opening clash held in Houston on Sunday. The Group E clash was thoroughly dominated by the four-time champions even though Curacao raised hopes of a potential upset when Livano Comenencia scored the equaliser after Felix Nmecha had put Germans ahead in the sixth minute. Kai Havertz struck twice while Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav also found the back of the net to extinguish any faint hopes of the Coracao fans – known as the Blue Wave.
By scoring seven goals, Germany surpassed the Brazilian record of having scored most goals by a nation in FIFA World Cup history. Germany now have scored 239 goals in 113 world cup matches, one more than Brazil’s 238 from 115 matches. However, Brazil, the five-time world champions, can regain the record when they face Haiti in their second group fixture of the ongoing tournament being co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico. Five Teams With Most Goals In FIFA World Cups Germany – 239 Brazil – 238 Argentina – 152 France – 136 Italy – 128 Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said the performance will boost the team’s confidence. “We really need this self-confidence. I think it grew, it was definitely there but it grew," Nagelsmann said. “I’m very satisfied with us scoring seven goals and our performance for the most part.
A winning start is always important and we’re glad we managed it. We played with the right intensity. I think we can have a good tournament," he added. Since winning the title in 2014, Germany have had poor run in the world cups having failed to progress beyond the group-stage in the previous two editions. Nagelsmann says the team wasn’t nervous given they were overwhelming favourites. “The team was not nervous," Nagelsmann said. “When you write it down Curacao had easier conditions, I think we do have high quality, one team has high expectation and the other does not. And that is a bit tricky."
