The United States and Iran have agreed on a peace deal to formally end the ongoing West Asia war. The agreement, announced by US President Donald Trump, will be signed in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 19. A major outcome of the deal is the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran, allowing global oil trade to resume freely. The two nations will commence a 60-day negotiation period to address sanctions relief, Iran's missile capabilities, and its nuclear enrichment programme.
Initial drafts indicate Iran will halt nuclear weapon development for up to two decades. While global leaders and the United Nations have welcomed the breakthrough, potential roadblocks remain regarding Israel's military operations in Lebanon. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz brings significant relief to the global energy supply chain and countries like India, whose commercial ships previously faced disruptions during the 39-day conflict.
