A major political shift is underway as rebel parliamentarians from the Trinamool Congress announce plans to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India and extend support to the Democratic Alliance. To avoid legal complications and constitutional challenges associated with splitting a political party, the rebel faction has opted for a merger with a recognized regional party. The move follows a formal communication to the Speaker of the lower house by twenty rebel parliamentarians requesting to sit separately.
The mother party leadership has strongly opposed the division, citing previous Supreme Court verdicts on party splits and asserting that legislators alone cannot decide the fate of the party. The political crisis has resulted in three distinct factions claiming the party legacy, leading to an anticipated legal battle over the official party symbol. The development alters the numerical strength within the lower house and presents a significant challenge to the current leadership of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.
