A week after Central Reserve Police Force Director-General Gyanendra Pratap Singh advised personnel deployed in Manipur to neutralise miscreants moving in civilian areas with weapons, the State’s Director-General of Police Mukesh Singh said that the security forces would retaliate if attacked with guns. Warning individuals carrying firearms and trying to create unrest, the DGP said that such people who fire at the security forces would face strict action in self-defence. “Anyone with arms who tries to take law into their own hands will be dealt with very strictly. Those with weapons will be arrested, and those who fire at us will be dealt with in self-defence,” he told journalists in Churachandpur after his first visit to the Kuki-Zo-dominated district on Saturday (June 13, 2026).
The DGP said the security forces have so far recovered about 70% of the weapons looted during the initial days of the ethnic violence in Manipur. The conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people broke out on May 3, 2023, claiming more than 260 lives and displacing about 62,000 people over the months. He also said the police were monitoring online platforms and taking action against individuals and groups spreading misinformation that could trigger ethnic tensions. “Our social media monitoring cell is dealing with such cases,” he said. The DGP further said that coordinated operations against armed groups and illegal activities would continue as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in Manipur.
