The Trinamool Congress faces an internal split as a rebel faction claims the support of multiple Members of Parliament. A senior party leader has joined the rebel camp, citing dissatisfaction with the party leadership and its organisational handling. In a countermove, loyalist parliamentarians met the Lok Sabha Speaker to submit a letter from the party leadership. The loyalists urged the Speaker not to grant official recognition to the breakaway group.
They cited the recent Supreme Court judgment regarding the Maharashtra political crisis to argue that a faction cannot be legally recognised as a separate party within the house. The rebel parliamentarians, who are scheduled to meet the Speaker, maintain they represent the real Trinamool Congress and plan to meet the state chief minister before signing official documents. The ongoing developments indicate a prolonged legal and political battle over the official recognition of the political factions ahead of the upcoming monsoon session in the parliament.
