Passenger traffic at the Visakhapatnam airport has risen 170% in 11 years, from 10.98 lakh in 2014-15 to 29.68 lakh in 2025-26. The airport will mark the milestone on Monday (June 15, 2026), observing Yatri Suvidha Diwas. This growth reflects the airport’s evolution into the premier aviation gateway for north coastal Andhra Pradesh. Aircraft movements have seen a parallel rise, climbing from 11,306 to 21,799 over the same period, signalling the airport’s growing importance as a regional logistics and trade hub.
Infrastructure upgrades to meet demand To accommodate this traffic spike, the airport has undergone infrastructure modernisation. A terminal expansion commissioned in October 2022 increased the facility’s footprint from 20,000 sq m to 30,000 sq m, raising its handling capacity to 3.6 million passengers a year. Further reinforcing the passenger experience, the airport added an expanded security hold area in September 2024, with improved seating and boarding facilities. “These structural improvements ensure that the airport can maintain service excellence while supporting the record-breaking influx of travelers,” In-charge Airport Director N.
Purushottam told The Hindu on Sunday (June 14, 2026). Prioritising the passenger experience The Yatri Suvidha Diwas event is designed to prioritise the passenger experience, which remains at the core of all airport developments. Purushottam, said such initiatives were vital for direct passenger engagement and for recognising the efforts of frontline staff. He said that as the airport continued its journey of growth, modernisation and sustainability, passenger satisfaction would remain at the heart of all its initiatives.
By integrating technologies such as Digi Yatra, now used by nearly 30% of departing passengers, alongside barrier-free access and free Wi-Fi, the airport continues to improve convenience for its expanding user base. The celebration will feature community-focused activities, including health camps, a tree-plantation drive and the felicitation of essential staff.
