Videos of the angry drivers removing the American portraits have been widely shared on social media. The incident has led to backlash against a US Embassy outreach campaign titled “#Freedom250", under which Trump-themed covers and banners were placed on around 100 auto-rickshaws across the capital. The posters carried slogans such as “Happy Birthday America!" as part of preparations for the United States’ 250th Independence anniversary. The US Embassy in New Delhi reportedly paid auto-rickshaw drivers to display “Freedom 250" posters featuring the US flag and Donald Trump.Now, many drivers are said to be removing those posters in protest after reports of Indian sailors being killed by the US.
