A major rescue operation unfolded off the coast of Oman when a vessel named Virat One, carrying 14 Indian nationals, began sinking approximately 80 nautical miles east of Ras Al Hadd. The US Navy responded to the crisis by deploying a P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, which dropped a life raft for the distressed crew. The US Navy also coordinated surface assistance with a nearby merchant vessel, the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged MV Jabal Ali 9, to facilitate the evacuation.
All 14 Indian crew members were successfully rescued. The incident occurred amid recent tensions between India and the United States regarding the targeting of commercial vessels carrying Indian crew members. The rescue follows a recent phone call between External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and the US Secretary of State. The exact cause of the dhow's sinking remains unknown. The vessel's last port of call was Sohar, and it was en route to Mumbai.
