Shivamogga JNN College of Engineering Principal Y. Vijayakumar appealed to the parents to prioritise their children’s interests, abilities and future aspirations over their own expectations
Shivamogga JNN College of Engineering Principal Y. Vijayakumar appealed to the parents to prioritise their children’s interests, abilities and future aspirations over their own expectations while guiding their course choices. Vijayakumar spoke after inaugurating an interaction on CET/COMEDK organised for students aspiring to pursue engineering and their parents at the MBA-MCA auditorium of JNN Engineering College on Sunday (June 14, 2026). He said that the students who pursue subjects aligned with their interests are better positioned to excel academically while developing skills that enhance employment opportunities.
“Educational choices should be made through understanding and guidance, not pressure,” Dr. Vijayakumar stressed. He advised students utilise the four-month gap following Pre-University examination results to research educational and professional pathways suited to their strengths. Conducting surveys on various courses, colleges and future opportunities before making decisions would be prudent, he added. The job market today values not just graduates but students equipped with problem-solving capabilities to address societal and industrial challenges, he said and recommended students select colleges that prioritise innovation, research, entrepreneurial initiatives, enterprise culture and practical learning.
Gopi, Divisional Manager of Canara Bank, explained that students can self-register through the PM Vidyalakshmi portal as per government directions and apply for educational loans. Under the merit quota, loans up to ₹7.5 lakh are available, while non-defaulting students under the management quota can access loans up to ₹4 lakh. S. Narendrakumar, Assistant Professor of Computer Science Engineering, explained the CET-COMEDK selection process through a presentation.
Moyinuddin Khan, Chairman of the College Admission Committee; Surendra; and C.M. Nrupathung, Public Relations Officer of the Education Committee, were present at the programme.
