The Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar), on Sunday (June 14, 2026), decided to exit the Democratic Alliance (NDA) hoping to focus on strengthening the party. TMC (M) leader G.K. Vasan made the announcement after chairing the party’s executive committee meeting in Chennai. However, Mr. Vasan maintained his party did not have any difference of opinion either with the BJP or with the AIADMK or other allies in the NDA.
‘Alliance needed for elections’ TMC functionaries, he said, were of the opinion that in an alliance, the party functionaries had lesser responsibilities and for the TMC to grow as a political movement, it needed to function independently. However, Mr. Vasan also said that alliance was needed for elections. The former Union Minister acknowledged that the alliance in which his party was a part, could not win the elections during the past few years in Tamil Nadu.
“The TMC, is leaving the NDA, even as it remains friendly with the allies,” Mr. Vasan said. The decision, he hoped, would help the TMC strengthen itself. The
TMC (M) is the first party to leave the AIADMK-led NDA in Tamil Nadu after the recent Assembly elections where the alliance was pushed to the third place.
