A fresh war of words has erupted within the opposition INDIA bloc after former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan took aim at Rahul Gandhi over remarks made during a recent podcast, accusing the Congress leader of adopting an approach that is weakening the alliance and helping the BJP. The controversy began after Rahul Gandhi, while speaking about opposition unity, remarked that he could not hug Pinarayi Vijayan because there was an ongoing political fight between them. The comment quickly drew attention, prompting a sharp response from the veteran CPI(M) leader. "Hugging normally doesn't happen amongst us. Only in very rare situations, it happens. When Rahul Gandhi and I meet, we greet each other or shake hands. We don't hug," Pinarayi said. "But I have seen a photo of Rahul Gandhi hugging Modi. I don't have any problem in him hugging Modi, but what he said is a different kind of presentation." The former Kerala chief minister said the issue was not about physical gestures but the political message Rahul Gandhi's remarks conveyed. "This shows Rahul Gandhi's way of talk and how he is seeing INDIA bloc," he said. 'NOT STRENGTHENING INDIA BLOC' Pinarayi went on to argue that dissatisfaction with the Congress was not limited to the Left parties and claimed several alliance partners had voiced concerns within the opposition grouping.
"Not just us, but Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav and many parties spoke in the INDIA bloc against Congress. Now we are seeing where DMK is standing," he said. According to Pinarayi, the current situation within the alliance was the result of the Congress leadership's political approach. "It led to this because of Congress's attitude, especially Rahul Gandhi's attitude," he said. The CPI(M) veteran warned that such an approach was proving counterproductive for the opposition alliance. "It is not really strengthening INDIA bloc. Like I said earlier many times, it is coming to a point where it is helping BJP," he said. FRESH STRAINS IN OPPOSITION CAMP Pinarayi's remarks have added to growing signs of unease within sections of the INDIA bloc, where constituent parties have frequently clashed over leadership, seat-sharing and strategy despite coming together to challenge the BJP.
The latest exchange is likely to fuel further debate over the cohesion of the opposition alliance, with Pinarayi openly questioning whether the Congress leadership's approach is helping unite the bloc or pushing its allies further apart. Ends
