Training of field trainers for the Census 2027 in Chennai city for operational guidelines, applications and procedure will begin at five locations across Chennai Corporation zones on Monday (June 15, 2026). As the first phase of training for field trainers who include Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials is expected to be conducted in Chennai Corporation offices from June 15 to June 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., civic officials are expected to make alternative arrangements for delivery of civic services for residents. Why Census 2027 matters for development, democracy and representation First phase The training for field trainers for Tiruvottiyur and Manali will be conducted at Manali zone GCC office, while field trainers of Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar will receive training at the North Chennai GCC Regional Deputy Commissioner Office, Basin Bridge Road.
Several officials from Ambattur and Anna Nagar will receive training at the GCC central regional office in Shenoy Nagar. Census fieldwork contradicts government data, enumerators asked to revisit, review data Training of field trainers of Adyar and Perungudi will be held at the GCC south regional office, Dr. Muthulakshmi Salai, while Teynampet and Kodambakkam officials will be trained at GCC zonal office, Lake View Road, Nungambakkam. Second phase The second phase of training for field trainers will begin on June 18 for officials of zones Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Sholinganallur, Alandur and Valasaravakkam.
With the population of the 15 zones of Chennai Corporation estimated at 85 lakh and more than 14 lakh buildings assessed for property tax, many officials of the civic body are expected to focus more on the Census 2027 preparatory work in the coming days. Ahead of the Census 2027, Chennai Corporation officials are also preparing for house listing operations which shall be conducted from August 1 to August 30 in the city. The self-enumeration by residents shall be conducted from July 17 to July 31. As many as 256 field trainers including tax assessor, sanitary inspector, and assistant engineer will impart training.
Over 12,000 enumerators will be nominated for the city with 2,000 supervisors. Enumerators will visit door-to-door for the house listing during August in the city.
