(File pic: X/@myogiadityanath) Uttar Pradesh’s Panchayati Raj Department has reported significant progress over the past 5 years under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marking major gains in rural development, digital governance, sanitation, and infrastructure. A recent presentation made under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary outlined the department’s achievements and laid out future plans aimed at making Gram Panchayats self-reliant and technologically advanced. According to official data, Uttar Pradesh currently has 57,694 Gram Panchayats, serving a rural population of approximately 15.53 crore, which accounts for 78 percent of the state’s total population.
In a bid to strengthen grassroots governance, Gram Secretariats have been set up in all Gram Panchayats, while 24,311 Panchayat Bhawans have been constructed. These Panchayat Secretariats have been equipped with furniture, computers, internet connectivity, and drinking water facilities to support day-to-day administrative work. Digital services have seen rapid expansion in rural areas. A total of 54,958 Common Service Centers (CSCs) are now operational across the state, through which more than 49.38 lakh services have been delivered to rural residents. Officials stated that this push towards e-governance has not only improved transparency but also enhanced the income of Panchayats. In the area of sanitation, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a leading state at the national level under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), particularly in the construction of community toilets. Thousands of villages are implementing initiatives for solid and liquid waste management, grey-water management, and plastic waste management.
The ‘Waste to Wealth’ model is also being, helping Panchayats generate additional income from waste processing and recycling activities. Capacity building has been another key focus area. The department has organised training programmes for lakhs of Panchayat representatives and employees under various schemes, aiming to improve their administrative and governance capabilities. At the same time, innovations such as digital libraries, the Panchayat Gateway Portal, and the digitisation of family registers are providing a modern and streamlined framework for rural administration. Looking ahead, the department has set an ambitious agenda to further accelerate rural development. Upcoming initiatives include the ‘Mera Talab-Meri Zimmedari’ campaign, establishment of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants, expansion of digital libraries, construction of Panchayat Utsav Bhawans, and the rollout of the Chief Minister Panchayat Incentive Award. Officials expressed confidence that these measures will help write a new chapter in the state’s rural transformation in the coming years.
