Panic gripped passengers at Howrah station on Tuesday after smoke was detected in the toilet of a general coach of the Howrah-Raxaul Mithila Express (Train No. 13021). The incident occurred on platform number 8, just moments before the train was scheduled to depart for Raxaul. According to eyewitnesses, the sudden plume of smoke triggered fear among the passengers, causing many to rush out of the coach onto the platform in a bid to escape.
Upon receiving information, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and senior railway officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Railway staff immediately initiated the process of replacing it with a new coach to ensure the train could safely resume its journey to Raxaul.
Talking about the incident, one of the passengers told India Today, “We spotted smoke in the general compartment. We got scared and immediately started running as soon as we spotted the fire in the train.” When asked how the fire broke out, he could not cite any reason. An investigation has been launched by the railways to determine the cause of the smoke.
