File pic/AP In a blistering indictment of Pakistan’s domestic security policies, Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has launched a fierce attack against the country’s establishment over its heavy-handed response to mass unrest in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Addressing the floor of the parliament, Achakzai warned that the federal government’s repressive strategies are systematically dismantling decades of local political alignment. He pointed out that the local population, who historically rallied under mainstream pro-Pakistan narratives, has now turned out in the hundreds of thousands to protest against the state machinery.
The veteran politician condemned what he termed a hybrid regime’s unsustainable reliance on military force to suppress civil demonstrations. Commenting on the recent deployment of security forces and subsequent casualties during public agitations over economic grievances and political rights, Achakzai declared that the ruling elite has developed a dangerous indifference to civil liberties. He asserted that firing bullets at one’s own citizens is entirely unacceptable under any constitutional framework and alleged that state institutions are actively executing a cover-up to obscure the true scale of casualties and administrative failures on the ground. The Cost of Structural Alienation Lamenting the severe erosion of trust between the state and local communities, the opposition leader questioned the strategic wisdom of targeting populations that were historically considered core allies. He noted that these communities had long functioned as steadfast companions and geopolitical benefactors along the volatile frontier. By substituting meaningful political engagement with tactical violence, the current administration has successfully managed to isolate communities that once formed the bedrock of its regional policy.
Achakzai’s parliamentary intervention follows weeks of escalating tensions across the region, where grassroots action committees have mobilised unprecedented public turnouts. While federal ministers have repeatedly sought to blame foreign elements for the volatile law-and-order situation, the opposition has rejected these assertions as an institutional deflection. Achakzai emphasised that the spreading fires of discontent across Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and now PoJK are a direct consequence of structural excesses by security agencies rather than external conspiracies. Demands for Accountability and Transparency The scathing critique has intensified the political friction in Islamabad as the treasury benches continue to push for an all-parties consensus ahead of a critical budget session. The opposition, however, has threatened a complete parliamentary boycott, linking its cooperation to immediate institutional reforms, an end to the ongoing security crackdowns, and a verifiable audit of human rights conditions in the peripheral territories. As the state moves to clamp down on media reportage and internet access in the affected zones, lawmakers from across the opposition benches have echoed Achakzai’s demands for absolute transparency.
