The White House has confirmed a bilateral meeting between the Indian Prime Minister and the United States President on the sidelines of the upcoming G7 Summit in France. The talks come at a critical juncture, following the deaths of three Indian sailors in military strikes by United States forces on commercial vessels. The United States has maintained that commercial vessels moving through the Strait of Hormuz must inform their forces and that procuring Iranian oil without permission is considered illicit.
The Indian government has registered a strong protest regarding the casualties, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy over conflict. In addition to addressing the maritime incidents, the two leaders are expected to discuss a bilateral trade agreement. The Union Commerce Minister previously indicated that the first tranche of this trade deal could be finalised by late July, ensuring fair competition and protecting domestic agricultural interests.
The discussions at the G7 Summit will also focus on strengthening partnerships in high-end technology and defence sectors to stabilise the strategic relationship.
