Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is experiencing severe unrest, with Pakistani security forces killing at least 27 people to suppress protests in towns like Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, and Mirpur. The region is facing turmoil over governance, inflation, and state repression. Amid rising tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, demands for India to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are increasing. Historically, Jammu and Kashmir legally joined India on October 26, 1947, after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession following an invasion by Pakistan-backed Pashtun tribesmen.
Despite the United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 calling for the withdrawal of Pakistani forces, Pakistan continues its illegal occupation. The region was divided by the Line of Control after the 1949 Karachi Agreement. Furthermore, Pakistan ceded the Shaksgam Valley to China in 1963, adding to Chinese-occupied territories like Aksai Chin. For decades, residents in Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of POK have protested against the Pakistani army, voicing strong opposition to the illegal occupation of their land.
