The development marks a fresh setback for Mamata Banerjee as a dissident faction seeks separate recognition and claims the support of several TMC MPs. (IMAGE: PTI FILE) Senior Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay has signed a letter submitted by the party’s dissident camp seeking recognition as a separate bloc within the TMC, a development that could deepen the turmoil within the party after its defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The development comes days after Bandyopadhyay met Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi along with rebel TMC MP Shatabdi Roy, a meeting that had fuelled speculation about his political stance amid the growing rebellion within the party. The dissident faction has announced that it will meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday to seek recognition as the “real TMC". Rebel MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia has claimed that 19 of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha members are backing the group. The faction is being led by Kakoli Ghosh Dasdidar, who has said that once recognised, the bloc would support the BJP-led NDA in Parliament.
