The evolution of spacesuits has transitioned from basic rubber garments to advanced technological systems designed for lunar exploration. In the 1930s, aviator Wiley Post wore the first pressure suit, created by tire manufacturer BF Goodrich. By 1965, astronaut Ed White conducted the first American spacewalk, though early suits lacked functionality. This was evident in 1966 when astronaut Gene Cernan experienced a fogged visor and high heart rate during a spacewalk.
For the 1969 Apollo moon mission, NASA selected ILC Dover, a company associated with Playtex undergarments, to create suits featuring liquid-cooled systems. These Apollo suits were hand-stitched by seamstresses. The space shuttle era introduced modular suits, worn by Bruce McCandless during his untethered spacewalk. Currently, the International Space Station utilises the American EMU suit, which requires a 45-minute preparation, and the Russian Orlan suit, which takes five minutes.
Looking ahead to the Artemis third mission, NASA has collaborated with Italian luxury fashion house Prada to design functional spacesuits for the upcoming lunar landing.
