Trouble mounts for Trinamool Congressâs national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as a fresh complaint has been lodged against him in Siliguri for allegedly making a provocative remark during the 2026 election campaign. Sources close to the development told India Today that Sanjay Kumar Singhal, a businessman and the former president of the Siliguri Merchant Association, filed a written complaint at the cyber police station under the Siliguri Police Commissionerate, citing that his speeches and videos that were circulated through his social media accounts were capable of creating panic and political tension among the common people in the state. Read Full Story The complaint specifically referred to speeches made at the Nandigram rally on March 25, 2026, the public meeting and roadshow at Maheshtala on April 27, 2026, and the election rally at Arambagh.
During the election campaign, he made several statements that were not in accordance with the law. How can a Member of Parliament break the law? In the remarks he made on May 4th, he invoked the name of the Union Home Minister,â Singhal told news agency ANI. âAn individual considers himself so powerful that he openly challenges the country's Home Minister. The Election Commission has the responsibility to ensure a fear-free election. Can such an election truly be fear-free?â he further added. On the same day, Singhal filed the complaint, a contingent of West Bengalâs Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrived at the residence of Banerjee with a fresh notice, summoning him over his alleged provocative remark.
The CID presided over the investigation after an FIR was lodged against Banerjee in the Bidhanagar Commissionerate for his provocative remark made during the 2026 election. After the CID officials waited for a few hours outside Abhishekâs residence, TMCâs de facto No. 2 came out and received a copy of the notice. âIf action is being taken against me for saying DJs will be played after May 4, then why was no FIR lodged against Amit Shah when he said TMC workers would be âhung upside downâ to straighten them?â Banerjee said. âAt that time, the Election Commission was in charge of law and order.
No action was taken because then they would have had to proceed against Amit Shah as well. Now that there has been a change of guard in the state, a case has been lodged against me. We will challenge this disparity before the court,â he added. Ends
