Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana on Saturday (June 13) inspected ongoing infrastructure works in Amaravati, with a special focus on canal and drainage development projects aimed at improving flood management in the capital region. During his visit, the Minister reviewed the progress of bridge construction works across Kondaveeti Vagu and Palavagu. He said the projects were progressing at a rapid pace and would play a crucial role in ensuring smooth drainage during the monsoon season.
“We are constructing 69 bridges across Kondaveeti Vagu and Palavagu. Efforts are being made to ensure that rainwater flows without obstruction and that no area in Amaravati experiences water stagnation during the rainy season,” Mr. Narayana said. The Minister also referred to the recent approval granted by the Union Cabinet for the construction of Central Government offices in Amaravati. Responding to allegations by YSR Congress Party leaders that the proposed buildings involved excessive expenditure, he said the claims were misleading.
According to Mr. Narayana, the construction cost of the Central Government residential complex would be ₹3,945 per square foot, while Amaravati’s HappyNest housing project was being built at ₹3,393 per square foot. The construction cost of residential quarters for gazetted officers was estimated to be ₹3,684 per square foot, he added. He noted that several buildings planned in Amaravati were iconic structures, which naturally involved higher construction costs. Citing examples such as the Parliament building and the Telangana Secretariat, he said project costs had increased substantially between the initial tender stage and completion.
The Minister alleged that the YSRCP was spreading false information regarding Amaravati projects and asserted that such campaigns would further erode the party’s political support. Officials accompanying the Minister briefed him on the status of ongoing infrastructure and drainage works across the capital city region.
