Aimed at boosting air connectivity, tourism, industry, and employment, the state government is pushing ahead with new airports, terminal buildings, and the expansion of existing facilities. According to the latest progress report of the Civil Aviation Department, key projects at Gorakhpur, Agra, Kanpur, Aligarh, Moradabad and Shravasti have recorded significant advancement. In Gorakhpur, where flight traffic has been steadily increasing, the state government has decided to develop a new civil terminal. To facilitate this, an MoU was signed in June 2025 between the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Ministry of Defence for the transfer of 42.14 acres of Indian Air Force land.
Most of the work related to the relocation of assets has now been completed. Currently, an average of 12 flights operate from Gorakhpur Airport. At Agra Airport, the construction of a new civil terminal is underway. While 52 acres of land had already been provided earlier, an additional 92.50 acres has now been acquired for the project. The construction work, being executed by AAI, has reached around 60 percent physical progress. Kanpur Airport has already seen the completion and inauguration of its new civil terminal. Under an agreement between the state government and AAI, 50 acres of land was provided for the project, which was developed at a cost of approximately ₹150 crore. At present, four flights are operating from the airport. A proposal to provide around 100 acres of additional land for further expansion of the terminal complex is under consideration. In Aligarh, airport development work was completed in 2024. The state government has now moved to undertake a major expansion of the facility.
For this, ₹738.60 crore has been approved for the acquisition of 275.74 hectares of land. Most of the required land has already been purchased, while acquisition of the remaining portion is in progress. The conversion of the Moradabad airstrip into a full-fledged airport was also completed in 2024. Currently, technical processes are underway between AAI and the state government regarding land identified for its expansion. Authorities are working on verifying geo-coordinates and ensuring land availability in line with the approved master plan. Shravasti Airport, developed under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), was completed in 2024 as well. For its expansion, 218 hectares of land have already been acquired against the required 226.75 hectares, with acquisition of the remaining land continuing. An amount of ₹350 crore has been approved for this project. Officials say the broader objective behind these investments is to link different regions of Uttar Pradesh through enhanced air connectivity, thereby promoting tourism, attracting industry and investment, and creating new employment opportunities.
