DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant on Friday urged the Tamil Nadu government to constitute a committee to recommend a minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural produce, alleging that farmers were being affected by low prices and power supply issues.
In a statement, she said farmers in Cuddalore, Virudhunagar, and other districts were struggling as agricultural produce was not fetching remunerative prices despite their investments and hard work. She also alleged that frequent power cuts had disrupted agricultural activities and added to farmers’ difficulties.
Stating farmers form the backbone of the State’s economy, Ms. Premallatha said the government should ensure fair prices for agricultural produce and protect farmers’ livelihoods. She urged
the government to constitute a committee to examine the issue and recommend an MSP mechanism, saying it would help improve farmers’ economic condition and safeguard their interests.
