The incident occurred around 10.30 a.m. while a first-year Commerce class was in progress at the college located opposite the old Superintendent of Police’s office. More than 80 students were reportedly present in the classroom when chunks of plaster detached from the ceiling and fell, triggering panic among students. The injured students were identified as Sheetal Basavaraj, Divya Subhash and Sneha Kashinath. College staff immediately shifted them to the District Trauma Centre where they have been admitted for treatment.
Deputy Commissioner Ikram Shariff and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Rahul Sankanur, who visited the hospital, enquired about the health of the students. The officials reviewed their medical condition with doctors who informed them that CT scans and other diagnostic tests have been conducted and that all three students are in stable condition. Speaking to reporters after the visit, Mr. Shariff said that one student suffered a head injury, while the other two suffered injuries to their shoulders and back after being struck by the falling plaster. Doctors have advised that there is no cause for concern, he said and added that the students will remain under observation in the hospital for 24 hours.
The Deputy Commissioner directed doctors to provide treatment in accordance with medical protocol and consult specialists, if required. He also said that parents of the students have been informed and told that there is no need to panic. The incident has raised concern about the condition and maintenance of government educational institutions. Parents and local residents said that inadequate upkeep and structural deterioration may have contributed to the accident and demanded accountability from the authorities concerned. Kalaburagi South MLA Allamprabhu Patil, who visited the college, expressed concern over the quality of construction of the building. He said that officials have been instructed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, including whether deficiencies in construction or maintenance were responsible for the collapse.
Meanwhile, the district administration has sought a report from the officials concerned on whether adequate preventive measures have been taken to ensure the safety of students. Authorities have also been directed to assess the structural safety of the building and undertake necessary corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in future.
