Tummala writes to Centre for additional Urea allocation ahead of Kharif season

The Telangana government urged the Centre to address a significant shortfall in urea supplies and ensure adequate allocations for the coming months. In a letter addressed to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao highlighted the gap between planned and actual urea supplies during April and May 2026 and sought immediate intervention to safeguard fertilizer availability for farmers.
In his letter, the Minister said as against the planned allocation of two lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of urea for April 2026, the State received only 1.53 LMT, resulting in a shortfall of 0.47 LMT. The supply situation remained challenging in May as well. Against a requirement of two LMT, only 1.67 LMT had been dispatched.
This has adversely affected the State’s efforts to build buffer stocks ahead of the peak agricultural season. To overcome the situation, the State government requested the Centre to direct fertilizer importers, including NBCL, IPL and KRIBHCO, to make up the April deficit of 0.47 LMT. The government requested an extra 0.47 LMT of urea over and above the June allocation as compensation for the shortfall experienced in April.
The Minister noted that the State’s demand for urea is expected to rise due to increased cultivation of major crops such as paddy, maize and cotton.
