The Shivamogga district administration has reopened Hulikal Ghat (Balebare Ghat) on State Highway 52 to light motor vehicles with immediate effect, two months after a fatal landslip forced the closure of the strategic hill pass on April 9. The ghat, which connects the Shivamogga and Udupi districts, had been closed for vehicles following a landslip that claimed three lives and injured four others.
They were all construction workers engaged in building a retaining wall — a protective measure against recurring landslips — when the incident occurred. The complete closure of this route severely disrupted movement between the two districts, affecting commerce, commuting, and access to medical and educational services.
