The evolution of spacesuits spans nearly a century of technological advancements, beginning in the 1930s with aviator Wiley Post's pressure suit created by the B.F. Goodrich tyre company. The journey continued with astronaut Ed White's historic 1965 spacewalk and Gene Cernan's challenging mission a year later, which highlighted the critical need for functional designs. By 1969, NASA partnered with ILC Dover, whose seamstresses hand-built the Apollo lunar suits equipped with liquid-cooled undergarments.
The space shuttle era introduced modular suits, famously worn by Bruce McCandless during his untethered spacewalk. Currently, the International Space Station utilises the American EMU and the Russian Orlan suits, each with distinct operational protocols. Looking ahead to NASA's Artemis third mission, which aims to return humans to the Moon, the space agency has collaborated with Italian luxury fashion house Prada. This partnership integrates aerospace engineering with advanced design, ensuring the next generation of lunar explorers wear suits that combine decades of innovation with unprecedented mobility.
