Even as Trump reportedly remains at loggerheads with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over ending the war in Iran, he faces immense pressure back home over rising fuel prices driven by the Hormuz blockade amid the conflict. Peace Deal In Geneva?
Negotiators have drafted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) — which was also approved by President Trump — that could serve as a foundation for a broader peace deal between the two nations. According to a report by Reuters, an MoU between Washington and Tehran is expected to be signed in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday. Negotiators are seeking to complete working by Sunday, paving the way for a signing by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, even as Iran asserts “no final agreement" has been reached yet. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warned Iran would not compromise on its “red lines", saying the proposed deal is currently under review by Iranian authorities. Geneva: The Capital Of Peace Although the place for a final agreement between the U.S. and Iran remains unconfirmed, Geneva — dubbed as the ‘Capital of Peace’ — has emerged as the likeliest venue. Nestled at the southwestern tip of Lake Geneva, the Swiss capital sits in a natural basin near the French border, serving as a hub for international diplomacy and finance.
A favoured spot for high-stakes diplomatic meetings between global powers, Geneva not only is home to the United Nations and multiple UN agencies, but also to the Red Cross and various other international organisations. Swiss president Guy Parmelin called it the “city of peace" as he welcomed former U.S. President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir in 2021, signaling how the French-speaking capital could play a vital role in international relations even during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2009 and 2010 in Geneva, the United States and Russia concluded the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) treaty, the last major legally binding nuclear arms control agreement aimed at governing the world’s two nuclear powers. The city has hosted several meetings between the U.S. and Russian foreign ministers, including the 2009 summit between Sergei Lavrov and Hillary Clinton. At the time, Clinton had offered her Russian counterpart a plastic “reset button", hinting at the revival of bilateral ties. Geneva is the highest-preferred venue for diplomats for its flexibility, discretion, and the secure environment that it offers. What’s The Deal About?
