According to a report by the news agency PTI, rebel MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said the rebel group had already submitted a representation to Speaker Birla, adding it would formally stake a claim on Monday, June 15.
“We have submitted the letter… On Monday, we will go to the Speaker and stake our claim to form the real TMC parliamentary group. We will ask the Speaker to give recognition to our claim," Basunia said. Basunia, an MP from Cooch Behar, is among the rebel MPs who backed the formation of a separate parliamentary faction and decided to support the BJP-led Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha. He rejected allegations by TMC MP Kirti Azad that lawmakers were being induced to switch sides, calling him a “liar". “Kirti Azad is a liar. This is not right to say. We are 19 MPs and he is also an MP… it is not right to make such allegations". A Bruising Defeat And Crisis The TMC — led by Mamata Banerjee — is witnessing possibly the worst crisis in decades, after several of its MLAs and MPs openly declared rebellion against the party’s high command, particularly Abhishek Banerjee, in the aftermath of a poll rout.
A group of 19 dissident TMC MPs, led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, reportedly submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla claiming Dastidar remains the party’s Chief Whip in the House. The group announced its decision to back the BJP-led Democratic Party (BJP) in Parliament. The TMC had earlier faced a rebellion by its legislators in the state, with expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee leading the rebel group and stating that 58 MLAs had been given recognition in the Assembly as the principal opposition group.
