Pope Leo has criticised world leaders for what he called their indifference to migrant deaths and for ignoring the dignity of people crossing borders. The Pope comments came during a visit to Spain's Canary Islands, a major destination for migrant boats trying to reach Europe.
A Spanish NGO estimates that more than 3-thousand people died trying to reach the Canaries last year. Pope Leo urged politicians to create legal and safe pathways for migrants and to take a harder stance against human trafficking.
The Pope began his trip to Spain by praising the government's support of migrants. While much of Europe is tightening border controls, Spain is holding its door open, by offering undocumented migrants the hope of legal status.
