(Credit: X) Indian shooting legend and national high-performance coach Jaspal Rana passed away at the age of 49 after suffering severe cardiac complications, bringing an abrupt end to the life of one of the country’s most influential figures in the sport. The events leading to his death began during India’s participation in the ISSF World Cup in Munich, where Rana reportedly experienced chest pain and discomfort. Despite these symptoms, he continued travelling and did not immediately seek intensive medical treatment. According to doctors, this delay proved critical. “Mr. Jaspal Rana presented with an acute heart attack that was already three days old.
He had been travelling and continued to experience chest pain before arriving at the hospital in a very critical condition," said Dr Balbir Singh, Group Chairman (Cardiac Sciences, Pan Max & Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology) at Max Hospital. “The artery responsible for the heart attack was completely blocked. His heart’s pumping function was severely weakened, and he was in heart failure," he added. Rana was admitted to Max Super Speciality Hospital in Saket after returning to New Delhi, where doctors inserted a stent to clear the blockage. Initially, his condition improved significantly, and there was optimism about his recovery. However, tragedy struck unexpectedly just as he appeared close to being discharged from the hospital. “Mr. Rana had recovered significantly and was fit for discharge today. However, he unfortunately suffered a sudden cardiac rupture while asleep, which led to his demise," Singh said.
Reactions To Tragic Passing The shocking news triggered an outpouring of grief across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the decorated shooter, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji. His passing is a profound loss to the world of Indian sports. He brought immense glory to the nation through his extraordinary achievements in shooting." “Equally remarkable was his contribution as a mentor, shaping and guiding young athletes with great dedication. His unwavering commitment to excellence, discipline and service to the sporting world earned him immense admiration," PM Modi added. Rana leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as both a champion shooter and coach, having guided several of India’s finest marksmen, including Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker.
