Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday (June 12, 2026) urged the Tamil Nadu government to declare the Cauvery delta districts drought-affected and provide relief to farmers, citing the non-release of water from the Mettur dam for kuruvai cultivation this year.
In a statement, he said storage in the Mettur reservoir stood at only 41.64 tmcft, resulting in the delay in water release. He warned that weak Southwest monsoon conditions and
low storage in Karnataka reservoirs could severely affect Kuruvai cultivation in the delta districts. Stating that inadequate cultivation could lead to production losses of around ₹2,000 crore and affect lakhs
of agricultural labourers, he called for drought relief, consultations on alternative short-duration crops, a kuruvai package with an input subsidy of ₹5,000 per acre, and uninterrupted three-phase power supply for farmers.
